Each year we’re told our winters are getting harsher and more extreme. The sad reality is some Australians experience the razor edge of winter far more than others – the homeless. Whilst most us can simply turn up the fire or put on another couple of layers, there are many in our community who don’t have that luxury. What happens to them when winter really starts to bite?
Over 116,000 Australians struggle with homelessness every year – including thousands right here in our own backyard, the NSW South Coast.
Founded by Grace Rey, Socks ‘n’ Jocks on the South Coast was established to help those who are most vulnerable to the climactic extremes of the winter months. Each year the goal is to bring local communities together in support of those who – for reasons far beyond their control – are homeless and unable to keep the cold out on their own. Last year, Socks ‘n’ Jocks received overwhelming support for the winter campaign and raised thousands of dollars worth of ‘socks ‘n’ jocks’ across the Shoalhaven. In 2019, they’d like to see the initiative do even more – so Socks ‘n’ Jocks are calling to the local Illawarra community as well.
It doesn’t matter what size, shape, colour or gender you’re donating for, your ‘Socks ‘n’ Jocks’ (or clothes, hats or blankets for that matter) just have to be new. This year, it’s even easier to make your donations now with three convenient drop-off locations in Bomaderry, Nowra and Figtree during the month of May.
Yes, South Coast winters are cold. But we also know local hearts are warm, so please be sure to get involved to help our homeless this winter with Socks ‘n’ Jocks. After all, wearin this together.
